2018 Arnot-Roberts Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County, Clageux Vineyard 750 ML
96 James Suckling
A perfumed and inviting nose of blackberries, blackcurrants and gravel. Medium-to full-bodied and so fresh and present on the palate. Well-structured tannins. There’s purity to the expression of the ripe red and black fruit with bright minerality and great depth. Such a pleasure to drink now, but this will age wonderfully. Best after 2026.
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Clajeux Vineyard is a powerful, savory wine that expresses all of the character of this Chalk Hill site. Dark cherry, plum, gravel, scorched earth, leather and a good bit of whole cluster savoriness from the 30% stems give the aromatics tons of presence to play off the wine’s mid-weight structure. This is a fabulous vintage for the Clajeux.
Arnot-Roberts was founded in Healdsburg in 2001 by childhood friends Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts. Beginning with one barrel of wine made in their basement, the winery started small and grew slowly by sourcing grapes from some of the most remarkable vineyards in California.
The focus of Arnot-Roberts is to produce distinctive, site-driven wines that highlight the nature of the unique terroirs in which the grapes are grown. The journey to this end has led Duncan and Nathan to seek out vineyards throughout Northern California and now includes incredible sites in Napa Valley, Sonoma Coast, Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Rita Hills, Clearlake and Sierra Foothills. Single-vineyard wines are the core of the production as well as a few appellation bottlings that clearly speak of their individual upbringings. Some of the vineyards are old and dry-farmed, some are newer plantings but all are farmed and cared for by passionate and conscientious growers, which is paramount to the fundamental goal of Arnot-Roberts: producing the most honest and expressive wines possible.
2017 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley 2017 1.5 liter (magnum)
The 2017 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is ruby in color with notes of blackberry, blueberry, roasted coffee beans, coriander, and a hint of nutmeg. Smooth upon entry, this wine is broad
and plush on the mid-palate. It has an elegant density throughout and a long, generous finish. Given proper cellaring conditions, this wine will show beautifully through 2041.
Silver Oak began over a handshake between two friends with a bold vision: focus on one varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon, aged exclusively in American oak and worthy of cellaring for decades to come.
Ray Twomey Duncan, a Colorado entrepreneur who began investing in California vineyards in the late 1960s, and Justin Meyer, a Christian Brothers-trained winemaker, co-founded Silver Oak out of a dairy barn in 1972, producing only 1,000 cases of their inaugural vintage. Over the next two decades, Silver Oak grew in popularity. Silver Oak’s Napa Valley and Alexander Valley Cabernets sold quickly upon their release from the winery and became a highly sought-after staple on restaurant wine lists nationwide. Today, the Silver Oak brand ranks among the most iconic in California’s Wine Country.
